Description

Rachel Holborow was a member of the incredible DIY bands Avocado Baby, Pussycat Trash, and Red Monkey, and co-founded the label Slampt. I think of her as an active participant and an inspiration, someone who’s always led with ethics and with tenderness too. Her new zine, ‘Escaped Goat’ reflects back on the energy and friendships and damage that were the foundation of her participation in the underground. It’s great! Rachel has a poets skill for putting together words, for metaphor, for knowing where to end a sentence. She is an excellent storyteller and understand how to let the stories breathe and relay their own truths without moralizing. At one point Rachel describes renting builders’ vans to go on tour and the temporary modifications she and her bandmates would make to their interiors, to make them manageable. She writes, “This dark, semi dangerous, not really legal space was our necessary cocooning portal.” This is, of course, a very clear emblem for punk, for her punk, for the kind of punk I’m guessing most anyone reading this will understand. A relatable and affirming zine recommended to people for whom the phrase “around the time that In on the Kill Taker came out” will resonate.
