Description
Belle du Soir were an Australian band who released this one eerie, unruled, and boneless 7” in 1981. Fans of Young Marble Giants will recognize a kind of skeletal, wide-eyed intensity and fans of Amos & Sara will recognize the brash, borderless approach to song. The sudden appearance of horn blurt, the dramatic tempo change that feels like a crash. There are a lot of unexpected decisions on this record! There is also something very fragile about these songs: the scarcity of notes, the band-wide hesitation to take up too much space. Sometimes it feels like a sudden movement or sharp word might collapse them? But Belle du Soir seem completely oblivious to this instability, a toddler tumbling down a hill or jumping off a ledge because it just hasn’t ever been seriously hurt before, doesn’t realize the risk. This band reminds me of a few very loved records but honestly I’ve never gotten this feeling from music before, it is very special.
