This photo of the Long Beach band Argument? is so revealing that I feel silly trying to write anything else about them. There’s a great, visceral tension between the grim anger of their hardcore roots and the kind-hearted camaraderie of the two band members sitting on the floor. The structure of Argument? – drums, keyboard, bass, two vocalists – is a perfect vehicle for making this new kind of punk that is outraged, defiant, generous, and full of possibility. Bridging the gap between the fury of the band playing in the basement and the deep friendships forming in the backyard between sets.
