There’s an interview with bass legend DJ Magic Mike where he recalls finding out in the late 80s that people were slowing his records down to accentuate the bass. He didn’t like that – he felt like he’d gotten the bass right, it didn’t need any help. So he started putting sub-frequencies on the record that were right at the borderline of danger. When slowed—the border crossed—the bass pushed too far and ripped speaker cones.
I think DREAM_MEGA works right at that borderline. An extreme that’s exactly right, an extreme where the songs could survive being pushed, but you, the listener, wouldn’t. If you talk to Joel Kyack, the artist behind DREAM_MEGA, he talks a lot about this extreme, about the type of clarity and transcendence that exists at the frontier. An extreme that exists at the visceral outburst of a metal show, that exists in the depths of a dire sickness, that exists in the telling of a horrific story about a table saw accident. Set all of this to a neanderthal thump and resonant melodies that feel older than civilization, put that lurking sub-frequency danger under the whole thing and you’ve got Control / You Are Not the Center.
