Self described as “hardcore girls from Lima, Peru,” Tomar Control make a relentless, outraged, finger-pointing kind of youth crew music. Their third LP, Frente Al Miedo (“in the face of fear”) is their best, the band’s ever-so-slightly melodic take on hardcore is packed here with deep frowns, gang vocals, indignation, and foreboding menace. You can definitely trace a thread from Uniform Choice through Insted and In My Eyes to Tomar Control, but every song on Frente Al Miedo carries some unexpected detail or riff that sets the record in its own trajectory. There’s a feeling on this record of turbulence, thunder/lightning/wind/jostle/drop, more than a threat: actual danger. And Tomar Control are completely grounded in this storm, all poise and strength. What kind of song does that? Look to “Mundo cruel” and its closing lyrics: “Sentimientos de frustración no me detendrán, voy a luchar/No cambiaré el mundo, haré mi propia parte lo voy a aceptar” (“Feelings of frustration won’t stop me, I will fight! I won’t change the world, just do my part and deal with it”).
