PETTY CRIME – BRIGHTON, UK, 1999

Now! Brighton, UK, 1999 is the way to hear Petty Crime’s final recording session on a 7” EP. The 1998 Petty Crime 7” on Slampt is one of my all time favorite records: sharp, breathless, petulant. I love the lyrics, I love the prickliness of the guitar, I love the melodies of the bass, I love the tautness of the whole thing. I wish they made ten more singles! A hundred more! I said this often enough to band members Layla and Helen that they finally found the tape of their final recording session, three songs made in a bedroom shortly after Helen’s 1999 return to the UK following a year in Portland. Helen said that the songs draw on her experience in the very-short lived Portland band Modessa (JABS 06 did you buy it??), and I hear that tightrope strung between deliberateness and wildness. I also hear a bit of those Huggy Bear demos in here, particularly in the cardboard box/phone book percussion. Most of all I hear one of the great bands of my lifetime making three strange, unpredictable, urgent punk songs and I am SO EXCITED
