Description

Flak was an early 80s New Zealand band that were clearly absorbing the stuff coming out of Rough Trade around that time, they made a tightly-wound, rhythm driven kind of post punk with distressed, defiant male/female vocals. New Zealand cassette label INDUSTRIAL TAPES released ‘Monitor’ in 1983, this reissue includes the song “St Tropez” which was inadvertently left off of the band’s split LP with 8 Living Legs, released in 1984 by Flying Nun Records. The discogs page for this release excerpts the label’s apology for this error, as printed in the September 1984 issue of ‘Rip It Up’ it’s a pretty funny read! Anyway, Flak were a great band, under-considered for sure, maybe a corollary to Nocturnal Projections in the sense of being an early contributor to New Zealand’s DIY movement that feels indebted to an international scene but lays a path for the unique, exploratory, memorable kind of music that these people would go on to make. Reissue by No Label NZ, released in 2023 in an edition of 70 copies.
