Description
Unmarry Me is a new band, formed in 2025 by Lise Frances (Help She Can’t Swim), Chris Rowley (Huggy Bear, Adulkt Life), and Jon Slade (Huggy Bear, Snoozers). This is their first 7”. When I talk about “urgency” in music I often use it as a way to say a band plays fast, breathless, busy. Unmarry Me make urgent music but it’s not this kind of urgent. These songs are shadowed, dark blue, slyly melodic. They have a lot of breathing room. They swing! But they are urgent. These songs—in their unornamented hooks, their hushed voices, and their persistence of meaning—feel to me like the most important thing in the world. So full of refusal, of readiness, of closeness too. I like seeing a band, but a lot of times what I am most moved by is a conversation afterward, that sidewalk moment where you’re about to part ways with someone and head home but you just wanted to say one thing which inspires one more thing and another after that, 40 minutes passing without notice, in escalation and determination and common cause. Unmarry Me feels like that conversation, dire and clear eyed and fiercely connected, except from time or capitulation.
