Kismet is the first record by Mick Kelly. It is an insomniac sound diary, a vigorous plea for clarity, a dedication to the propulsive force of a steady bass hit. It is the best outcome of restless hours in an instrument-filled room. Written and recorded in the small hours between days spent working on a Maryland farm, Kismet maps a whole year of secret nights—from the patient, weathered desolation of “Your Anger is What Protects You” to the chiming jitter of “Good Grief” to the arcane tenacity of the title track. Nothing is off limits: guitars, drum machines, field recordings, a warbling Liam Gallagher all contribute to the songs. There is a collision of electronic and acoustic sounds on this record that prompted Chris Rowley to remark “futures fucking with the pasts.” It speaks to the balance of earnestness and alienation articulated on this record, a fluctuation between interior and exterior. It comes off as a midway point between Cat Power’s Moon Pix and Belong’s Realistic IX, the trust in guitar counterbalanced by the kind of distress that can only be articulated by digital static. Potent, dented, unwavering.
