Description

The unknown is a rare place in music I think. So much music is about commonalities, the aches and outrages and glees we all share. Even, like, the Shadow Ring works toward a kind of unsettled, off feeling that is so compelling because I’ve felt it exactly but never been able to describe it. This excellent EP convinced me that Nein Rodere has seen or experienced or felt something that I have not ever accessed, something I don’t know at all. These three songs do a good job of helping me toward that something: a kind of guiding, a kind of beckoning. The experience is less about learning something specific and more about creating a vast sense of some whole other set of possibilities I never could’ve found or imagined on my own. “The Perils” opens with a subtle, intense bassline and a wordless vocal that pulls Brigitte Fontaine into Suspiria, maybe? Eerie and daring and untethered, a whole lifetime of cloudy skies, clawing trees, creaking doors packed into 195 seconds. The flip side is a return to reality, grounded by sirens, meows, and scraps of pop radio. Spare and heartfelt, both songs have a late-night hush, a sadness of exile, a tenderness that doesn’t ask for anything.

Self-released in an edition 100 copies, packed in a thick, kraft board sleeve and includes stickers and an artist photograph
